Assurance Wireless Improves Free Plan to Further Help Californians in Need
Eligible customers can get Unlimited Free Calling and Unlimited Free Texting with the New California FREEdomSM Plan
Assurance Wireless, the popular Lifeline program that began offering service in California in 2013, is launching an enhanced free offer for eligible low-income Californians. The California FREEdom plan includes unlimited free voice minutes and unlimited free texts, an offer supported by the California LifeLine and federal Lifeline Assistance programs.
Assurance Wireless provides cellphones and free phone service to millions of low-income residents in 40 states, including California, where more than 1,423,000 residents are without a job and 26 percent are living below the federal poverty line. This new offer in California will replace the basic Assurance Wireless plan of 250 free voice minutes and 250 free text messages and is specifically designed for California LifeLine eligible customers.
The application process for Assurance Wireless varies from state to state. In California, interested residents can contact Assurance Wireless by calling (toll-free) 1-800-395-2171 or visit www.assurancewireless.com/CA to request a California Lifeline Application Form. The application will arrive in a pink envelope from the California Lifeline Administrator.
“What a difference this new plan is going to make in people’s lives,” said Bevan Dufty, head of Housing Opportunity, Partnership & Engagement for the city and county of San Francisco. “It will help them tremendously when they’re trying to find housing, employment and to reconnect with family.”
Current Assurance Wireless customers in California will be migrated to the California Freedom Plan and automatically receive the additional benefits every month unless they choose to remain on their existing plan.
“For more than 25 years, the Lifeline program has provided support to low-income Americans that keep them connected especially through periods of financial hardship,” said Grace Boehm, director of strategy and business planning, Assurance Wireless. “As more and more Americans choose wireless over landline phones, we are pleased to provide additional service to help them to stay connected with employers, doctors, schools and families, and ease their burden.”
In addition to a voice mail account and call waiting, Assurance Wireless provides caller ID and access to 911 in case of emergency. Customers can also keep an existing cellphone number and move or “port” it to an Assurance Wireless account. Beyond the unlimited free voice minutes and unlimited free texts each month, customers can choose from other low-cost options to purchase data and international calling at competitive rates.
California residents may qualify for Assurance Wireless if they participate in certain public assistance programs, such as Medicaid, Medi-Cal or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). They may also qualify based on household income. Applicants must provide proof of program participation or proof of income when they submit the official California LifeLine Application form to the California LifeLine Adminstrator. Eligibility for Assurance Wireless varies by state.
“I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have Assurance Wireless,” said customer L. Banks. “It is such a blessing for those of us who struggle to find work in this economy. I have not found a job yet, but I have been able to communicate with potential employers and obtain interviews with the use of this phone. As someone who has been sort of homeless, I'm able to address issues dealing with my current circumstances. Thank you for being there.”
About Assurance Wireless
Assurance Wireless is a California LifeLine provider. Assurance Wireless from Virgin Mobile, one of Sprint’s no-contract brands, provides Lifeline service supported by the federal Universal Service Fund (USF) and the California LifeLine Program. Enrollment is available to individuals who qualify based on federal and state-specific eligibility criteria. The discounts provided by the California LifeLine and federal Lifeline programs are limited to one per household. Assurance Wireless provides service on the Nationwide Sprint Network, which reaches more than 281 million people.
The offer is available to eligible CA customers residing in select geographic areas and is non-transferrable. Unlike a traditional wireline phone, a wireless handset may be removed from the home. By removing a wireless cell phone from a residence that does not have other phone services, residents may not have a way to make 911 calls during an emergency. Also, wireless service may experience interruptions because of weather conditions, terrain or gaps in service coverage. Assurance Wireless is subject to the Important Service/Product and General Terms and Conditions found on http://www.assurancewireless.com/Public/TermsandConditions.aspx.
